While the 1990’s were the decade of the microbrewery, this decade is certainly bearing witness to the rise of the micro-distillery. Today, we now have a distillery in all 50 states. Quite a remarkable feat when you consider the quirky, if not flat stupid laws in some states that greatly hindered the legality of microbreweries as well. | Read More

True North Wheat vodka is a newer spirit launched as a companion vodka to Grand Traverse Distillery's traditional rye vodka. It is used with Michigan grown wheat and uses the same process and glacial water from the Great Lakes. It was offered as an alternative vodka offered for a lower price as a gesture of support to Michigan during the troubled economy of 2008 and 2009. | Read More

reviewed True North Vodka in 2009 and wrote an article entitled “True North Vodka Blew Us Away”. True North Vodka received a Rabble Score of 5. The link is provided below for the full article. “In a crowded field of vodkas and with microdistilleries springing up all over the country with vodkas of all kinds, it’s important to be able to distinguish oneself somehow. A person has to have a singular reason and rationale to carry a given vodka in their personal inventory. A distillery has to give a person a reason to buy. In this, the Grand Traverse Distillery has succeeded grandly. The True North vodka is a truly distinctive vodka that can be added to any bar as a departure from the ordinary. Our thanks to Grand Traverse for the introduction to their extraordinary and distinctive vodka.” | Read More

Chris Carlsson of SpiritsReview.com reviewed True North Vodka in October 2008. True North Vodka was given an “overall rating of 9 out of 10 and outstanding value, 10 of 10. “Final Thoughts: One of the few vodkas that I can say are really worth paying over $25 for. A little more money than either Stoli or the Avian Fashion Victim Vodka, but infinitely better. Really outstanding vodka. If you like rye vodka in particular you are in for a real treat.” | Read More

True North Vodka: The original Grand Traverse product is a quality addition to the super-premium category, so much so that it was awarded a gold medal by the 2007 International Review of Spirits.
It's a smooth, silky spirit, which is a "must" quality to be in this category. The combination of good northern Michigan rye and the region's quality water gives this Traverse City distillery a leg up. I found a slight bit of pleasing heat along with the smoothness, thereby imparting a bit of extra character that holds up through the triple-filtration process.
True North Natural Cherry Flavor Vodka: If Grand Traverse had selected any other fruit for its initial flavoring it would have been laughed out of a state known for the quality and abundance of its cherry crop, a crop so integral to the region that it calls itself the Cherry Capital of the World.
The trick here is that instead of merely infusing the rye-based vodka with cherries, there is a hint of chocolate as well. That's one more credit to Rabish's creation that helps differentiate it from the pack of fruit flavor-infused vodkas with which it is competing. I found the richness of this concoction at once both arresting and satisfying. | Read More

Tasting Notes: Crystal clear. The nose is wonderfully floral with an equal dose of sweet grains and an accent of wet rivers tones. The palate confirms the nose being silky and expansive on the palate with hints of citrus zest and teaberries. Ideally balanced ready to act as a solo performer or mixed into your favorite cocktail. This beauty will soon make you forget about those pricey imports. Retail $21.97
